How to spot a reputable Goldendoodle breeder

Goldendoodles are one of the most in-demand breeds in the country, which means there are many places to buy one — and not all of them are doing right by the dogs or the families. A reputable breeder is the difference between a confident, healthy homecoming and years of preventable problems. Use this guide as a checklist whether you end up with a Kid's Best Doodle puppy or one from somewhere else.

Look for third-party accountability

A reputable breeder is willing to be reviewed by people other than themselves. Two of the strongest signals in the United States are Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accreditation and Good Dog certification.

Kid's Best Doodle is BBB Accredited and a Good Dog certified breeder. Good Dog independently vets breeding programs against published standards for health testing, socialization, and ethics, and provides Payment Protection on every placement made through the platform. Breeders who avoid this kind of oversight are usually avoiding it for a reason.

Ask how and where the puppies are raised

  • Are the puppies raised inside the home, with real family life, or in a kennel or outbuilding?
  • What is their early socialization plan? Look for Early Neurological Stimulation, crate introduction, pee pad foundations, grooming exposure, and exposure to normal household sounds.
  • How many litters does the breeder produce each year? Quality programs limit numbers on purpose.
  • Can you meet the breeder by video — FaceTime or Zoom — and see the home environment, not just a curated photo?

Ask about health testing — specifically

A reputable breeder does not say "our dogs are healthy" and leave it there. They will tell you exactly what testing has been done on the parents, and they will not be offended that you asked.

For Goldendoodles, that typically includes OFA or PennHIP hips, elbows, cardiac, and eye exams, plus a panel of breed-relevant genetic conditions (PRA, vWD, DM, and others depending on lines). The puppy itself should have a licensed vet exam, age-appropriate vaccines, deworming, and a microchip before homecoming.

Read the contract before you fall in love with a puppy

  • Is there a written health guarantee? What does it cover and for how long?
  • What is the spay/neuter expectation, and is it age-appropriate for the size of dog?
  • What happens if life changes and the family can no longer keep the puppy? A reputable breeder takes the dog back, for life. No questions.
  • Are deposits and payments handled through a secure, protected platform (like Good Dog), or is the breeder asking for Zelle, Venmo, or wire transfer to a personal account?

Walk away from these red flags

  • No video tour of where the puppies are raised, or a vague "we don't do visits."
  • Multiple breeds and many litters available at once with no waitlist.
  • Pressure to send a deposit today to "hold" a puppy you have not had a real conversation about.
  • Claims that puppies are already fully potty trained or crate trained at 8 weeks old.
  • No mention of health testing on the parents, or testing only "available on request" but never produced.
  • No support after the puppy goes home.

What lifetime support actually looks like

A reputable breeder is a resource for the life of the dog — not just until the puppy is paid for. At Kid's Best Doodle, families can reach us with questions years later about training, grooming, food, vet decisions, or just to share photos. That relationship is part of what you are choosing when you choose a breeder.

A short checklist you can use

  • BBB Accredited and/or Good Dog certified.
  • Raised inside the home with a clear socialization plan.
  • Specific, named health testing on both parents.
  • Written health guarantee and lifetime return policy.
  • Secure payments through a protected platform.
  • Willing to meet you on FaceTime or Zoom before any money changes hands.
  • Available to support your family after homecoming.
