Pick up or move out of reach
- Electrical cords and chargers.
- Shoes, socks, kids' toys, and anything else that's chewable.
- Medications and vitamins.
- Cleaning products and chemicals.
- Small objects that could be swallowed.
Secure or block off
- Trash cans. Get ones with lids or put them behind a cabinet.
- Houseplants. Many common ones are toxic, including lilies, pothos, and sago palms.
- Stairs, balconies, and rooms you don't want them in yet. Baby gates are your best friend.
- Toilet lids. Keep them closed. In-tank or clip-on bowl cleaners leave chemicals in the water between flushes, and puppies will drink from anything at floor level.
Outside
- Check your yard for gaps in fencing.
- Remove or fence off toxic plants, mulch (cocoa mulch is dangerous), and standing water.
- Make sure pools or ponds are inaccessible.
Where to start
Start with the rooms your puppy will spend the most time in and expand from there as they settle in. You do not need to puppy-proof the whole house in one weekend — just the spaces they will actually use this week.
