What F1 actually means
An F1 Goldendoodle is a first-generation cross — one purebred Golden Retriever parent and one purebred Poodle parent. The result is roughly 50% Golden and 50% Poodle.
F1 puppies tend to have wavy, soft coats. They are often low-shedding, but not non-shedding. For families without serious allergies, F1s offer the classic Goldendoodle look — teddy bear face, easygoing temperament, slightly less coat maintenance than a Poodle.
What F1B actually means
An F1B Goldendoodle is an F1 Goldendoodle bred back to a purebred Poodle. The result is roughly 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever.
That extra Poodle influence usually means a curlier coat, lower shedding, and the most hypoallergenic-friendly option among common Goldendoodle generations. F1Bs are typically the recommendation for families with allergy concerns.
Shedding and allergy considerations
- No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Allergies are triggered by dander and saliva proteins, not coat alone.
- F1B Goldendoodles produce the least loose hair and dander of the common Goldendoodle generations, which is why they are often chosen by families with mild-to-moderate allergies.
- If anyone in your home has a serious allergy, spend time with an adult Goldendoodle of the same generation before committing. Reactions vary by individual dog.
- Curlier coats need more frequent brushing and professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks to prevent matting.
Which generation fits which family
- F1: families with no significant allergies who want a softer, wavier coat and slightly easier grooming.
- F1B: families with mild-to-moderate allergies, or anyone who prioritizes the lowest-shedding option.
